Tape echo problem  Reply with quote

Hi everybody!

Just in case there are some analog freaks out there: I need help with my tape echo units: a Roland Space Echo 301, a Roland chorus Echo 501 and a Dynachord *whatsitsdammnedname* ....

They all suffer from a strange problem. After about ten minutes, the tape just begins to stick to the heads, this increases until the tape almost jams. Tape heads seem to get hot, so the plastic tape gets sticky when heated up.

Tape heads are as smooth as a baby's a**. Tape itself is brand new. Yes, I did clean the tape heads. Yes, I cleaned the rollers, too. Yes, I cleaned the whole damn unit.

Still the tapes get stuck. In ALL TREE units.

Any explanation?? I am at a loss.

Alex

PS: This is what makes mechanics so much more exciting than electronics ...

do you buy the loops or make your own?
it sounds like you are using a poor quality of tape.
good luck

I always make my own, since the standard tape loops are indeed bad quality. Tapes are highest quality studio tapes, right out of one of our nations biggest radio stations ...

See, everything *should* be perfect. I did all - cleaning, demagntizing, brand new tapes, differnet tapes, whatever - still, the tapes get stuck. :-(

Cheers,
Alex

If it happened just on one machine, ok ... but on all three? In short time?

Anyway, this thread started more than two years ago ... in the meantime I went completely digital Mr. Green

But thanks for your help. I am thinking about selling my old stuff and that would mean restoring all those units ... ugh.

Cheers,
Alex
