hmm, i warm up in all differnt ways, if im in a shreding mood, id do this.
first, i do a warm up where i just use all of my fingers and go up in half steps all the way up a string, and go faster anf faster each time. after that, i try it doing it up and down scales. then i do some chord progressions, making them harder each time. usally after that, i start doing what ever i want, branching in all differnt types of directions. if your just in that laid back chord mood, id just do some chord switching progressions to warm up your hand, and go from there. theres aton of other ways i warm up, but i cant really explain it well (im not a great explaining person). hope that somewhat helped.

I generally warm up using a variety of picking exercises and scales that I gradually make more complex. Once I've warmed up a bit it then depends on what I want to practice but generally I'll divide my time into sections so I'll spend maybe 20 minutes on leggato and then 20 minutes onpicking and 20 minutes improvisation using a backing CD.

Hi when i practice technique i start with a warm up about 10-15 minutes of chromatic exercises then I move on to picking routine where i practice scalar type licks at a very slow tempo with a metronome to get my hands synchronised (time i spend on picking depends on overall time i have) and then i warm up my right hand with tremolo picking (looking out not to tense it to much) and after a moment i try to play my picking exerscises faster still using a metronome. Then i move on to other techniques like legato(practice scalar runs and stuff and some trills for finger strength and independence) and for sweep picking i do 3 strings sweeps for warm up and then move on to 4,5,6 strings shapes and move them all around the fretboard... And after this part of my practice routine i move on to little etudes combining all techniques and maybay some songs. I sometimes recover my tapping and fingerpicking technique if i need them but i`m not practicing them everyday...

I hope that my grammar hasn`t kill you :-)

Take care and everything the best Jasiek

When I go to practice, I'll actually stretch as if I was going to work out. If you think about it, you are working out the muscles in your hands and if your not careful you can damage them just like a pulled muscle on your leg etc.

So I just stick a tune on and set my alarm for five minutes and do several stretches of my arms and shoulders + legs before practicing. I find this helps my hands get warmed up and my body is less likely to tense when I attempt something more technically demanding.

Other then that, I simply just practice everything on my practice schedule I have written out for that week and try to master the movements needed to make the action and relaxation.

That's a really good idea. I work out every other day, and when I get home from the gym to practice, it feels much better on my joints and muscles. I think working out and stretches are great to do anyways, but they definitely come in handy with guitar playing in a sense that theyreduce the likeliness of injury and help get you warmed up.

Hi i forget to write it buy i go to the gym 4 times a week and this is definitly importent part of my guitar playing condition... About warming up outside of the guitar i sometimes hold my hands in hot water for a while especialy when it`s cold and my hands are stiff...

I sugest to everybody to remamber about that cause guitar playing especialy shred style is very demanding on muscles and can cause injuris...

Take care and everything the best for everyone...

Sorry for my english

I don't have as much time to practice as I would like due to work, teaching, etc, so usually when I have a block of time (anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour or more) I choose something that I need work on and focus mainly on that one thing. (Most of the time it is various picking exercises.) I focus very intensely on what I am doing and really pay attention to my entire body during this practice. This way I can get maximum benefit from the limited practice I am able to get. I think people often just slam through their practice without being really aware of what they are doing.

Jasiek, your English is fine bro. I understood you perfectly.

Although I'm not a shredder. I like to use the hot water technique to warm up my hands too. I think I read somewhere that Satriani does this too.

First, I use to start the practice scales or whatever i know. Then classical music = they are = leyenda, greensleeves, river in the pines, whitehouse etc. Next I practice some songs and may try to improvise them. then I learn new scales, songs music etc.

Although this is the natural way i use to play, sometimes it changes for other reason.

I always start with about 10 minutes of finger stretching....I use the routine that John Petrucci uses in Rock Discipline
