1. A principle chord study from the keys of: C, G, D, A, and E.

Hi bluescat and welcome. There are some great theory sites on the web. If you look around the forum some members have posted links, but this one is my favourite. http://www.zentao.com/guitar/theory/

It says it's for experienced players but even with a very basic knowledge of the guitar it'll be a great tool.

Good luck and happy playing!

Hi,

I`m not that great on theory myself, but this lot isnt as daunting as it may seem.
So, the major scale in the first position, not too bad as its slidable so for G the notes go in this sequence:-

G=1st note, A=2nd note, B=3rd note, C=4th note, D=5th note, E=6th note F#=7th note.

So its common in western music and you`ll see this pattern in countless songs too use the above scale and all the other majors scales like so
The 1st,4th and 5th as major chords so G,C and D the 2nd,3rd and 6th as minor chords Am, Bm and Em, the 7th is an F#dim which is rarely used.

Just google guitar major scale and you should be able to find a web page with a chord box like diagram for the pattern. It would be a good idea to try to learn all the notes on the 6th string as these will be the starting point known as the root for all your 1st position scales, and you only need to go down to the 12 fret as thats the octave where it starts all over again.

Hope this helps and good luck buddy

It is also very useful to learn the circle of fifths.. I hated the circle of fifths because it confused me greatly. Once I got into college and was forced to use it, I loved it. Today, I can't even imagine not using the circle of fifths, its just ingrained in there.
